2019 Future of Dentistry Panel Series Recap

Posted Dec 9th, 2019 in the wire, 2019, events

We wrapped up our coast-to-coast Future of Dentistry Panel Series last week with our final event in Kamloops, BC. Throughout the spring and fall, leading, growth-oriented dentists from across the country gathered to discuss the shifting landscape of dentistry and rapid rise of Dental Service Organizations (DSOs).

dentalcorp President and keynote speaker Guy Amini kicked off the panels with a talk on the evolving nature of dentistry. He explored what attracts clinicians to dentistry in the first place—namely the flexible lifestyle, financial independence and opportunity to provide quality patient care—versus today’s reality, marked by increased competition, greater operational and regulatory complexities and more demanding and sophisticated patients.

Guy further outlined the three primary ownership paths available to dentists today—sole practitioner, group practice investor, and Dental Service Organizations—and why more and more dentists are opting for the latter. Where sole practitioner and group investor paths tend to present administrative burdens and a high degree of financial and legal risk, DSOs afford minimal financial risk, economies of scale and supportive infrastructure. He cautioned, however, that while there are many benefits to joining a DSO, a number of very diverse models exist and stressed the need for clinicians to do their due diligence when evaluating potential opportunities.

In-depth panel discussions were held with members of dentalcorp’s Senior Leadership Team and regional legal, accounting and wealth management experts on a variety of topics relevant to dentists looking to sell their practices, including valuations, acquisition models and practice transitioning.

“It has been a true privilege to discuss the changing landscape of dentistry with our nation’s top clinicians and business owners,” said Guy Amini. “We look forward to continuing to build world-class Partnerships that support dentists’ professional ambitions and foster continued practice growth and success.”

Many thanks to all our incredible attendees, moderators and panelists for making our 2019 Future of Dentistry Panel Series a success. We look forward to the next panel series in the spring of 2020!
