Support Centre Team Member Spotlight: Carla Ofstie

Posted May 24th, 2022 in 2022, spotlights, the wire

Today we shine the spotlight on Carla Ofstie, Clinical Development Manager at dentalcorp’s Support Centre. Carla tells us about her journey in the dental industry, her entrepreneurial mindset, and the importance of collaboration with other dental professionals.

Tell me about your background – how long have you been with dentalcorp, and what were you doing before you joined?

I've been with dentalcorp for seven months as a Clinical Development Manager. Over the last 18 years, my various roles in the industry included Dental Assistant, Registered Dental Hygienist, Oral Health Consultant, and Regional Manager.

Can you tell me a bit about your role on your team? What does a typical day look like?

Each day is very different. My role is to support practices with clinical development relating to dental hygiene and orthodontics. I love collaborating with dental professionals to provide education and support to optimize clinical growth and enhance patient care.

Share something funny that's happened to you.

Where do I even begin? During the pandemic, my five-year-old son accidentally called my boss on FaceTime and proceeded to bring the phone into the bathroom while I was showering. "Mom, there is a man on the screen for you!" Luckily, I hung up the phone before things got too crazy, but it was a very chaotic situation. I called my boss back once I was dressed. It was an awkward conversation.

Share an experience you've had that's really left an impact.

I was one of the first independent dental hygienists to own a practice in my province. Becoming a business owner was an eye-opening experience that has significantly impacted how I view the business of dental hygiene. Being responsible for all aspects of the dental hygiene appointment, from start to finish, helped me understand the different roles required when providing comprehensive dental care. Also, I worked in a long-term care setting where I provided dental hygiene treatment to residents. I was able to see the immense need for these vital services in our communities.

Tell me something about yourself that your co-workers would never guess.

I secretly love listening to rap music.

What are your aspirations for personal and professional growth? Do you have a 5-year plan?

I've always had an entrepreneurial mindset, which has helped me grow personally and professionally. I aspire to write a book, become a public speaker, and position myself as a prominent key opinion leader in the dental hygiene industry.

What advice do you have for new team members joining dentalcorp's Support Centre?

There is a diverse range of very talented people within the dentalcorp network. Be proactive and connect with other teams. Collaboration will help enhance your experience within the organization.
